Hazards of Inadequate Chemical Waste Management
Nearly all branches of the chemical industry produce chemical waste. It can be solid, liquid or gaseous, and each form has its own severe hazards. Chemical waste is a frequent cause of injury, it is very harmful to human health and may even lead to death, for people, plants and animals.
Inadequate handling, storage, transport, treatment, or landfill disposal allows chemical waste to seep into the soil, air, surface and ground waters, plants and the food chain, causing permanent environmental damage.
Some types of chemical waste are characterised by higher or lower toxicity, others by volatility or flammability. Even non-toxic pollution, such as the usually harmless phosphates and nitrates, can present a hazard, causing algal eutrophication (blooms), suffocating life in rivers or lakes and polluting drinking water.
This type of waste is produced not only by industry, but also in agriculture, healthcare and households (e.g. toxic paint, flammable solvents, medicines, or mercury in thermometers...). Experience in chemical waste management plays an ever more important role.
Pančevo is just one of many examples of pollution of drinking water in Serbia:
Recent history has also shown cases of deliberate spillage of chemical waste into the environment, due to lack of experience and knowledge. Here is a report on the case of Times Beach in the USA:
