At the third CEDEF Convention held in Zrenjanin, MITECO initiated a discussion on another important subject.
III CEDEF Convention
The third CEDEF Convention was held in Zrenjnin on 21 April as part of the Annual CEDEF Program for cities and municipalities in Serbia – Sustainable Development Leaders. The Convention has held under the auspices of the RS Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, RS Ministry of Mining and Energy, Environmental Protection Committee of the RS National Assembly, RS Environmental Protection Agency and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vojvodina.
The Company Miteco Kneževac, is one of this year's partners of the CEDEF Convention. Over the course of the past years, Miteco has on many occasions provided services of disposal of various types of wastes, such as chemical waste, pharmaceutical waste, waste oils and lubricants, PCB waste and historical waste in the territories of the municipalities represented at the Convention, thus contributing to the solving of numerous environmental issues.
"In Zrenjanin we have successfully resolved several environmental problems, such as remediation of consequences of an industrial accident, disposal of PCB containing devices and solid PCB contaminated materials, while the general public is most acquainted with the case involving cleanup of a mercury spill on the pedestrian bridge over the Begej River in 2012, which was successfully and safely completed by Miteco. The focus in 2015 is the removal, first and foremost, of "historical" hazardous waste remaining in companies that are no longer operational, that are in the restructuring process or in bankruptcy proceedings that have been going on for a long time, the waste posing a threat to the environment", pointed out Nebojša Tomašević from Miteco.
Resolving many environmental issues and adequate disposal of waste, primarily waste resulting from historical pollution, is a problem of utmost importance from the economic aspect as well. "Companies, or the state, are in obligation to remove waste from companies undergoing restructuring as this is a pre-requisite for attracting new investors who will not be involved with any property without prior insight into the contamination status analysis. We at Miteco believe that there is finally good will to solve this problem permanently.
Miteco will also be attending the next - 4th CEDEF Convention which is scheduled to take place in Čačak on 26 June.
